He had something of a short peak (1981-85) that seems to have been the product of injuries and an unexpected early retirement (he was leading the AFC in sacks seven weeks in the '88 season before he suddenly decided to retire), but it seems like his role in playing through the 1987 strike fed perceptions that he was a selfish player who put himself before the team (not that that seemed to hurt Joe Montana and Howie Long, who also played through the strike) and didn't do him any favors. He's definitely someone who looks like he deserves to get in.

Gastineau should've been inducted into the Pro Football HOF a long time ago. #99 is the most decorated Jets defensive player ever. Here are some of his accolades:

5x Pro Bowler (1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985)
5x All-Pro (1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985)
5x UPI All-AFC Team (1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985)
2x NFL Sacks Leader (1983, 1984)
NEA NFL Defensive Player of the Year (1982)
UPI AFC Defensive Player of the Year (1984)
Pro Bowl MVP (1984)
NFL Record, Single Season Sacks (22), for many years
NY Jets All-Time Sacks Leader (107.5)
NY Jets Ring of Honor Inductee
NY Jets All-Time Four Decade Team
NFL Network's Top 10 Pass Rushers (#8)

I really don't understand the selection process? Go look at the tape, this was the most dominant DE of the time. Joe Klecko only gets his numbers and stats because offense was too worried about #99! Single season sack Record should have just been broken by TJ Watt, Strahan did not get it and we all know it! #99 Record stood for almost 30 years! At least make him a finalist!! Remember it is what he did "on the field" !

Mark not being in the HOF is a travisty. He dominated leading the NY Sack Exchange in the 80's . He and Joe Klecko DESERVE this honor , but i guess it is fake like WWE HOF and they pick who they like rather than those who earned it .
