I went through Army Basic Training Company as Alvin Reed in 1970 at Ft. Bragg. I did not have lot of personal interaction with Alvin as he was in a different platoon. However, he was so big that you couldn't miss him. I was impressed by Alvin because he always worked hard at all of the Basic Training drills. He never took it easy or asked for special treatment from the Drill Sergeants, even though I am sure they would have accommodated him. I asked him once why he worked so hard. Alvin said that he needed the exercise.
One thing about Alvin that I remember and makes me really respect him was how he took under his wing a fat, out of shape trainer named Kaiserman. At the start of Basic Training, Kaiserman would always fall behind and be beat in by the DI's. Alvin saw this and began to practically carry Kaiserman everywhere. Alvin saved Kaiserman from a lot of grief. He didn't have to do it . Alvin just saw someone who needed help and helped him. Alvin is truly a great human being.
