I do have a theory on why Monk got the attention from the voters instead of Gary Clark. Art Monk was the player that broke Steve Largent's reception record and was the first Wide Receiver to got 100 receptions in a season since AFL players did in the 1960s. Art also had way more receiving yards and receptions than Gary Clark. Art Monks gap between Clark and himself would've been even bigger without the 1982 NFL strike.

As far as Gary Clark goes, I think the 1987 strike did not help him although his amount of touchdowns still would've been problem even with a strike. The NFL strike prevented him from getting 700 receptions and 11,000 yards. One of his problems is the same as Art Monk. One of the problems Art had with the voters was his amount of touchdown receptions.

Gary Clark's stats did not age well. Also Henry Ellard and Irving Fryar didn't get inducted into Canton despite better numbers than Clark.
